School Day at Dollywood

Photobucket

Today we decided that Dollywood would serve as our classroom. We went with some friends.

It was the last day of the Festival of Nations, So I wanted to hit some things I believed would be truly educational for the kids. The first place we went was to see the Acrobat Show "Imagine".

It was incredible. These acrobats could ride unicycles on rolling balls and jump rope, with the unicycle on the ball. Crazy wild. We saw things we had never seen before.

Then we saw the Zamian Vocal group. We learned a little about Zambia, and Africa and the tribes etc.

We heard them sing Acapella. (A great treat.)

Photobucket Then we saw the Eagles. Photobucket I must admit these birds are intimidating up close. They are really large birds. Photobucket We even got to see a bald eagle nest. Look how big it isPhotobucket

Later during the day we learned about gravity. We learned that if get on Daredevil falls

and ride way way up, you will go way way down, way way fast!

So next time I will stay with the little girls and let Lisa take the boys on the ride.

We also learned that if you get in a raft in a river, you will get wet.

But we also learned that we dry quickly when we dress right.

So we had a great school day today and we all learned alot! I love Homeschooling!

Ds got a big trophy and a medal too, I just need to get a picture of him with it. It was pretty hectic that day and my batteries were running low.

Lexi's Yellow Belt

DD earned her Yellow Belt in Karate. She was very happy to earn it.

She worked really hard the past couple months to get it.

Retiring her white Belt.

Peyton Turns 9

Here is Peyton's birthday gift from us. Dad picked it out. We gave it to him the day after the party, because we felt that it would be better to wait until all the commotion had settled down. It would be more appropriate without all the kids around.

This way dh could take time and site it in, and go over how to use it etc.

He was so excited! He couldn't believe he got a real gun!

Pizza Unit Study

This week we are doing a Pizza unit. This was a special request by my son, so I squeezed it in.

I decided to use Currclick's Papa Paulo's Pizzeria.  It has alot of great ideas. Here is our line up.

Monday we read: Pete's A Pizza byWilliam Steig, Pizza Pat by Rita Golden Gelman (This is really cute and goes along the lines of the house that jack built.) The Pizza that We Made by Joan Hulub-this talks about three children and how they go about making a pizza. The Princess and the Pizza by Mary Jane and Herm Auch.

DD went over Pizza pattern pieces. I made patterns and she completed the sequences.

For math we are going over pizza fractions and will play pizza fraction bingo. This game is included in the unit from Currclick.

Tuesday we read: Maya's World Angelina of Italy by Maya Angelou, Pizza for Breakfast by Maryann Kovalski.

We made a History of Pizza Circle book. We went over Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Pizza's, finding the line of symmetry. Here is dd showing a picture of her symmetrical pizza. We also completed the Picky Pizza Matrix (both activities are included in the unit.) We went over fractions again.

Wednesday we read: Pizza Soup by Fay Robinson. We are copying this recipe,  and we hope to make this soon. We also read Dragon Pizzaeria by Mary Morgan.

For math we ordered pretend pizza's from Papa Paulo's Menu and figuring up how much the pizza will cost with added toppings etc. and then making change.

We decorated our own pizza box (this will be our lapbook) and put our unit pieces inside to store.

Photobucket You can see more pictures of this Lapbox if you click on our Notebooks and Lapbooks link on the side bar.

Thursday is Co-Op and Friday is our Little Hands Art Group. So that makes this a short week for at home studies.

The kids both designed symmetrical and asymmetrical pizzas. (I just learned this concept myself.) Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

This matrix was done by providing part of the answers of what each person did/did not like. So ds had to solve to find some of the missing answers. (Problem solving) Photobucket
